THE BIRTH OF VIOLENCE
le Phénix, scène nationale Valenciennes et pôle européen de création, Europalia 2019, Theâtre les Tanneurs [2019]
Three non-professional actors off stage. They debate the possibility of one of them using a gun by the end of the show. While opposing opinions, movements and emotions are projected on a screen, the audience helps the protagonist to complete an equally dilemmic artwork entitled The Birth of Violence. By juxtaposing these two layers, The Birth of Violence offers an unbiased philosophical perspective on extremism, on the emotional motives of radicalization and on how we show/view the phenomenon in contemporary media.
This half-documentary half-performance project explores the resorts that trigger violence in each and one of us and the channels through which violence has settled into public imaginary. The audience is provoked to abandon the idea of morality as system of binary opposition between good and bad and seek a personal, empathic, intuitive manner of positioning in confront with terrorists.
A coproduction between le Phenix, scène nationale Valenciennes et pôle européen de création, Saison France – Roumanie 2019, National Administration of Cultural Funds in Romania (AFCN), Theatre Les Tanneurs and Europalia 2019.
